Products To Create Texture in the Hair

Hair waxTexturizing products are designed to increase movement and create visible separation in the hair. Take your hairstyle to new heights (literally) with a little wax or paste!

These texturizers can be used before and/or after drying the hair. For strong hair that needs more taming or to build structure, I often do both. Using a hair dryer to shape the hair as it dries gives you maximum control.

Be cautious of how much you’re applying, though. Add a little at a time and make sure you purchase a product that’s right for your hair type. Here are some tried and true recommendations.

Hair Wax  |  Styling PuttyPaste/Cream

Note: Make sure the product is emulsified (spread around your fingers evenly) for best results. Apply on slightly damp hair for better distribution and more shine. On dry hair for the most matte finish.

TIGI Bed Head B for Men
Matte Separation Workable Wax
This firm hold wax is a hit because of its truly matte finish. No shine. And a remarkable ability to form and control thick, strong hair.

Bumble and bumble Sumo wax

Bumble and bumble Sumo Wax
A great hair wax for defining texture and adding shine to hair. Create separation in your style for a chunky, modern texture or control curls and waves. This product is great for those with fine hair who find other waxes too heavy. It’s light and malleable.

TIGI Bed Head Manipulator
Putty is light like wax, but slightly tacky and more of a cream base than wax. TIGI knows how to do product, and this is another winner! Best for medium textured hair or thicker hair that does ok with a lighter hold. A nice option to provide shine and definition to unruly waves and curls on short and medium length hairstyles.

TIGI Manipulator Matte

TIGI Bed Head Manipulator Matte Gel
On the cusp between a putty and a paste, this product provides great hold without stiffening in the hair and looks more natural than the original Manipulator, which has a more glossy finish. If you find the pastes and clays too strong, this one might be the answer for your needs.

Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shaping Cream
Defines short to mid-length hair with a medium/soft hold. This one’s great for taming unruly curls and errant waves and generally enhancing the natural texture of hair. The light, fresh scent is a plus too when so many products are over-perfumed, this one’s quite pleasant.

Kerastase Homme Capital Force Densifying Modeling Paste for Men
A control cream that amplifies the hair while coaxing it into shape. It provides a strong hold without being too perceptible in the hair. It’s a bit of a high end product but those who discover its effectiveness find it a worthwhile splurge.

For best results

It’s a good idea to use a clarifying shampoo like Bumble and bumble Sunday Shampoo occasionally if you’re a fan of hair wax, putties and pastes. Extended use can cause a buildup, making the hair limp and dull looking. Buildup will also decrease the effectiveness of products despite your best styling efforts.
